Monticello
Monticello was first settled in 1857 in an area about nine miles north of Olathe. The Monticello area was timbered and had been originally home to the Shawnee Indians. Monticello is remembered for its tragedies. A tornado almost destroyed the entire town in 1858 and J.M. Reed’s large hotel burned down in 1862.
