J.M. Hadley

J. M. Hadley was born in N.C., Jan. 25, 1835, and with his parents emigrated to Indiana in ’41. He came to Kansas in March ’55 in company with his brother Samuel; His father, Jerimiah, came and took charge of the Friends’ Mission, as Supt., in August ’55. The following year his life being threatened by a band of South Carolina and Georgia men, who took his horses and those belonging to the mission, and otherwise mistreated him; he returned to Indiana and never came back to take charge of the mission.

The subject of this sketch engaged in farming in ’55, and in ’56 worked on the Marion farm by the month. In ’57 he pre-empted a quarter section of land near Emporia, remaining till Nov., when he returned and located in Monticello Township, and engaged in farming. In ’59 he was nominated by the Republican Party, (then in the minority,) for the office of County Clerk—he, with the rest of the ticket was defeated. He served as Justice of the Peace for three years; enlisted in ’61 in Co. F, 8th Kan. Inf.; in ’62 was promoted from Orderly Sergeant to 2nd lieut; was detailed as Adjutant of the post at Ft. Leavenworth; and in ’63 was detailed by Gen. Ewing as his Adjutant—district of the border.

In ’63 he was promoted to lst lieut. Of Co. G., 9th Kas. Cav. He served with Gen. Ewing while in command of the department and in Dec. ’63 he was promoted to Capt. Co. G., 9th, Kan., and April 1st, ’64, in command of his company, he marched to Arkansas serving at Ft. Smith and Little Rock. In May ’65 he was promoted to Major of the re-organized battalion of the 9th Kan. Cavalry, and mustered out in Aug. ’65. In ’65 he was elected Sheriff of this county, re-elected in ’67, and in ’70 was elected Clerk of the District Court, and re-elected in ’72—always performing the duties of the office in an acceptable manner. The people have frequently acknowledged his worth by re-electing him.
