Elder William Gans
Elder William Gans is a native of Ohio, was born May 13th,1824. He went to Indiana in ’42, and in ’54 he commenced preaching as a minister of the Christian Church. He came from Johnson County, Indiana, to Kansas in May ’58—the wife of Gen. Lane coming with his family. Mr. G. located in Lanesfield, McCamish Township, and remained there five years, preaching and attending to the duties of the farm. In ’63 he removed to Autumwa, Kansas, and preached for three years at the Christian College. In ’66 he removed to Olathe, where he has since resided. He again continued preaching here, and in the surrounding country. In order that he might not be chargeable entirely to the brethren, he found it necessary to labor with his own hands, and engaged in the nursery business, in which he has done quite a flourishing business, and has a good stock on hand now. His nursery is known as “Cedar Grove Nursery,” located one fourth of a mile south of Olathe. It is due to his labors to a great extent, that there has been quite a large congregation of Christian brethren built up at Olathe. In ’44 he was united by marriage to Miss M. M. Harris, of Jefferson County, Indiana. She died in ’50, leaving a family of three children. In December ’51, Mr. S. married Miss Ann M. Torbitt of Jefferson County, Indiana. They have a family of six children.
