Thomas Douglass,

was born in the Highlands of Scotland, May 4, 1822, and in 1832 came to the United States with his parents, who settled in Virginia. In ’37 they immigrated to Pennsylvania. In ’39 he went to Wisconsin; in ’50 to Iowa; in ’53 to California, overland; in ’56 he returned to Virginia and Pennsylvania, and in September was married to Miss. Julia A. Smith, of Preston County, West Virginia; then settled in Iowa, and remained until ’66 when he came to this county and located just south of Shawnee. In ’71 he was elected a member of the board of county commissioners, which office he filled with credit to himself. He has been quire successful as a farmer, always producing the best of crops, and feeding them on his farm. He has perhaps the best barn in the county, a view of which will be seen on page 91 of this work. Being a man of strict integrity, generous and courteous, he is universally esteemed by his neighbors and acquaintances. He has one of the finest farms in the county, with splendid improvements, and well stocked. Mr. and Mrs. D. have all that tends to make life pleasant and agreeable; being surrounded by an intelligent and agreeable family of three sons and three daughters.
