Hon. J. E. Corless
Hon. J. E. Corless was born in Orange County, Vermont, August 4th, 1807. In 1834 he immigrated to Laporte County, Indiana, and engaged in opening a new farm. In ’37 he went to Rock County, Wisconsin, remained seven years, and then returned to Laporte. In ’52 he went to California, via Nicaragua, returning the following year, he went to Iowa. In ’54 he came to Kansas, and in ’57 located in Monticello Township in this county. In ’58 he was elected county commissioner, and in ’59 was elected a member of the first State Legislature, under the Wyandott constitution, and took his seat in March ’61. Mr. Corless has a fine farm, well improved; he devotes his attention principally to raising grain and stock, making it a point to feed on the farm, all grain raised except wheat. In ’36 he was united by marriage to Miss Elsie Jessup of Laporte County, Indiana, and his family consists of one daughter and two sons—all married.
