J. E. Clarke
J. E. Clarke is a native of Holmes Co., Ohio, born in 1828. He was brought up on a farm until 15 years of age, when he went into the mercantile business. He served as Clerk of his county in Ohio, and came to Kansas in ’60, engaging in the mercantile business in Olathe. When Quantrill visited Olathe, Sept. 6th, ’62, he took Mr. C’s entire stock of goods including the wearing apparel of the family—but by judicious management he has accumulated a fair share of this world’s goods, and is doing a prosperous business in the mercantile line. Mr. C. was elected Register of Deeds of this county, in ’62, and reelected in ’64. He was united in marriage to Miss Celia E. Miller, in ’52. Their family consists of one son, Laurin H.
