Colonel I. D. Clapp

Colonel I. D. Clapp was born in Bennington County, Vermont, July 29th, 1842. He entered Burr Seminary, Vermont, as a student in ’58. In ’59 he settled at Sarasota New York, and when his country was threatened by foes from within, he entered the army, enlisting as a private in the 77th New York Infantry and filled the following positions: corporal, sergeant-major, 1st lieutenant, adjutant, captain, manor, and was commissioned lieutenant colonel. He participated in many of the engagements on the Potomac and in front of Richmond. While in front of Petersburg, he was wounded April 2, ’65. He was mustered out in Albany, New York, July 9th, ’65; soon after coming west, he located in Topeka, and in ’67 located in Gardner, and engaged in merchandising. In ’69 he was elected a member of the legislature. In ’66 he married Miss Bettie M. Todd of Newport, Kentucky. He is now engaged in dry goods business in Gardner, and is surrounded by many friends. He is a valuable citizen, cheerfully encouraging everything calculated to promote the welfare of the county.
