Capt. A. G. Carpenter

Capt. A. G. Carpenter was born in Indiana co., Penn., Dec. 16th ’31. His father Ephriam, was born in Vermont, in 1788; was educated at Dartmouth College, and practiced law in Indiana co., Penn. His father, James, was born in Connecticut in 1763; served three terms in the army of the revolution, and was at the taking of Yorktown, Va. His father Ebenezer, was born in Conn. In 1709. His grandfather came to America from England in 1636; settled in Rhode Island, and was one of the family of three brothers, one of whom never married; the other two raised families, from whom there sprung numerous tribes of Carpenters. The subject of this sketch having studied civil engineering, in ’52 was employed on the Penn. Central railroad, until May of ’55; then was engaged on the Springfield & Mr. Vermont railroad of Ohio. In the spring of ’56 he went to Iowa, in the fall to Wis., and accepted a situation on the North Western rail road, in the civil engineer’s department. In April ’57 he came to Kansas, and located in Allen co., where for nearly two years he was employed by the settlers to survey their claims before the Government surveys were made. In Oct ’61 he enlisted as a private in the Iola battalion, which afterwards composed the 9th Kan. Vol. cav. He was elected 1st lieut. of co. D, and was appointed regimental quartermaster; which position he resigned in ’63, and returned to his company. In Jan. ’65 was mustered out of the service with his co., at Little Rock, and returned to his farm in Allen co. In the fall of ’65 he located in Johnson co., and now resides in Shawnee Township, on the head waters of Turkey creek, an industrious and prosperous farmer, always taking a lively interest in everything calculated to advance the interests of the county. He is one of the few men who do not hesitate to express boldly their opinion of another—without flattery. In ’65, Mr. C was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Duncan of Cass co., Mo. She died in Jan. ’72 leaving one child. In Dec. ’72, he married Miss M. A. Freeman, of this county. They have one child.
