Maj. J. B. Bruner

Maj. J. B. Bruner was born in Lycoming county, Pa., in 1837. His father, Abram Bruner, was born in the same county, and emigrated to Clinton co., Pa., in ’65, where he and the companion of his youth are now living at the age of over 70. The subject of this sketch, after learning the jeweler’s trade, emigrated to Mason co., Ills., in ’57, and there engaged in the jewelers’ business; in ’60 he went to Colorado, and after mining to a limited extent and prospecting extensively he returned to Ills., and enlisted as a private in co. K, 26th Ills. Infantry in the fall of ’61; he was promoted, filling every grade, except sergeant, up to Major, and after participating in the engagements at New Madrid, Island No. 10, Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg, Mission Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain, Ezra Chapel, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, etc., with Sherman on his “march to the sea,” he marched home, and immediately emigrated to Kansas, and located near Gardner. He was twice wounded, once at Iuka and again at Lovejoy. After locating in this county he engaged in farming; in ’69 he was united in marriage to Miss Minerva Cramer, of this co.; was elected County Treasurer in ’71, and re-elected in ’73 without opposition, a thing heretofore unknown in the politics of the county.
