J. H. Berkshire
J. H. Berkshier was born in Ohio in ’38. He is the son of Anson Berkshire of Spring Hill Township. In ’49 his parents went to Louisville, Ky., and in ’53 to Canton, Ills. In ’57 the family came to Kansas, and located in Spring Hill Township. The subject of this sketch enlisted in Company C. 2nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry May 15th, ’61, and participated in the battle of Wilson’s Creek. He was discharged in November ’61, and in September ’62 re-enlisted in Company I, 12th Kansas. In ’63 he was elected 2nd Lieutenant, and in ’64 was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of his company. He was discharged in July of ’65. Mr. Berkshire is universally respected by all who know him, and in ’74 was elected Trustee of his township.
