Mathew Babey
Mathew Babey was born in France—department of Hourien. Removed to Switzerland at two years of age; came to America in 1848; worked at carpentering in N. Y., 9 years. He came to Kansas in ’57, and located in the S. E. corner of Douglas County, where he still owns a farm. He took an active part with the Free State party, visited various parts of the U. S., and owned 7 acres of land, upon which the Union depot at Kansas City now stands. Was married first in Switzerland, his wife died in ’59, has had eight children, 4 sons, and 4 daughters; one daughter, Julia, now living in the southeast corner of Douglas County, Kansas, the wife of Frank Herrard. Mr. B. was married to Mrs. Holmes May 15th, ’73.
