S. H. Ayres

s.h. ayres

S. H. Ayres is the son of Buenos Ayres, born in Chester Mass., Jan. 17, 1810; and Sarah Ayres, born in Oxford, Conn. Sept. 2nd, 1816; the subject of this sketch was born in Willoughby, Lake Co. O. Apr. 23rd, 1835; married Louisa Emory of Geneseo, Ill., Jan. 22nd, ’56. March 13th, ’64 she died, leaving three children. May 6th, ’65 he married Miss Sarah E. Frank of Henry Co., Ill. Mr. Ayres first came to Kansas, Feb. 10th, ’60, locating at Spring Hill, without a dollar. But finding good neighbors, and having a willing mind and ready hand he succeeded reasonably. In ’62 he removed to Ill., and in March ’65, returned to Kansas, locating on his present homestead, with barely money enough to pay for his land, — 160 acres of wild prairie, all of which he has subdued and brought to a high state of cultivation. The large grove of forest trees, as seen in his view on page 63; an orchard of 2,000 trees that will this year yield over 250 bushels of apples; a large vineyard well pruned; small fruits in great variety, his well-trimmed hedges; his fine stock; and all of his improvements give ample proof of his industry and good management; likewise testify that he is a good farmer and a valuable citizen.
