Mrs. Lavina Armstrong

Mrs. Lavina Armstrong, Miss De Tar, was born in Westmoreland County, Penn.; was married in April ’48, to Robert Armstrong—came to Kansas in ’57, locating upon the present homestead, (camping in a wagon, while the present residence was being built.) Here the first quarterly meeting was held, in ’58, and Mr. A. organized the first Sabbath school in the township. Mr. and Mrs. A. were members of the U. P. church, but their liberal faith made them the friends of all orders which used their house in common. By the death of her husband in Aug. ’58, Mrs. A., left in charge of a family of almost helpless children, has by energy and perseverance improved the original homestead, and now enjoys the benefits of a well spent life, surrounded by many friends, and an appreciative family. The rearing of the beautiful grove and orchard seen on the farm is the work of her own hands.
