J. D. Allen

J. D. Allen was born in Kentucky in 1812. Going to Illinois in 1833, he remained thirteen years, being engaged in selling goods. Then returning to Kentucky, he engaged in the same business. On coming to Kansas in ’57, he located in Shawnee, and here again engaged in selling goods. He was elected a member of the constitutional convention which met at Mineola in March ’58, and after remaining one night adjourned to Leavenworth, where was framed the Leavenworth constitution, which was afterwards voted down by the people. He was in Shawnee the night that Quantrill burned the town. For twenty-five years he has filled the office of justice of the peace—fifteen years in Shawnee. He was united by marriage to Miss Adaline Constant of Illinois, in ’39. They have two children living.
